Harvard Environmental Fellows Programme applications are open for international PhD students with an annual salary of $90,000. The HUCE (Harvard University Centre for the Environment) launched the Environmental Fellows programme to enable recent PhD recipients to use and extend Harvard’s incomparable resources for addressing and tackling complex environmental concerns.
Fellows work with Harvard faculty members from any school or department for two years to build a community of researchers that reinforces connections across the university.
HUCE provides a co-curricular programme to ensure the fellows get to know each other and their line of work. All fellows attend fortnightly meals with Harvard faculty and a speaker from the Harvard faculty. HUCE anticipates awarding a total of six fellowships for the 2025 cohort.

The Harvard Environmental Fellows Programme 2024 provides the following benefits:
- The fellowship programme includes a salary of $90,000.
- Employee health insurance eligibility
- Reimbursement of up to $2,500 for relocation costs
- Annual allowance of $2,500 for travel and other professional expenses
- Access to Harvard’s extensive academic resources and interdisciplinary research opportunities
- Participation in biweekly dinners with Harvard faculty and guest speakers
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates should satisfy the following eligibility criteria to apply for the Harvard Environmental Fellows Program 2025:
- Candidates for the 2025 Environmental Fellowships must have graduated between May 2021 and August 2025. Fellows must submit their dissertations by September 2025 to begin their appointments.
- Candidates must have a doctorate or equivalent in any field and may submit research projects in any discipline. Applicants who do not have a PhD may apply if they have studied in subjects where a PhD is not the standard terminal degree. All selected candidates will be able to demonstrate academic research experience.
- Candidates with terminal degrees from Harvard and postdoctoral fellows working at Harvard are eligible for the fellowship if their research and host arrangements take them in new directions significantly different from their Ph.D. research and solidify new connections within the University. Candidates for Harvard should not propose working with the same professors or lab staff with whom they are currently engaged. No candidate should suggest considerable collaboration with their thesis advisor.
- Each candidate must provide a promise from one or more Harvard faculty members to serve as their mentor and provide office or lab space for the duration of the two-year fellowship. Faculty members who host fellows in 2024 are not eligible to host further fellows in 2025.
- Candidates may have graduated from any university in the world.
- Foreign nationals are eligible for fellowships; however, Harvard normally demands English competence.
- Successful candidates must be willing to work at Harvard for the whole two-year period of the fellowship. This fellowship requires Cambridge area residency and fieldwork trips during the summer or January recess.
