Scholarship Description

All freshman applicants to the University of Maryland who meet the early action deadline of November 1 and are invited to the Honours College are considered for nomination to the Banneker/Key Scholarship. No additional application materials are required. The Banneker/Key Scholarship is an undergraduate merit scholarship awarded to a group of selected students for up to a maximum of eight consecutive semesters. Recipients of this scholarship must register for a minimum of 12 credits per semester, maintain a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA), and successfully complete 30 credits per academic year.

The Banneker/Key Scholarship gets its name from two very prominent figures in American history, Benjamin Banneker and Francis Scott Key, both of whom resided in Maryland. This exceptional scholarship opportunity is offered to only a select group of applicants who have demonstrated significant academic leadership and accomplishment in high school. In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the Committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders who, as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.

Scholarship coverage

The scholarship can cover up to the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, housing and food, a book allowance, and includes admission to the Honors College.

  • Tuition fee reduction
  • Living expenses
  • Accommodation
  • Application

Eligibility

  • All freshman applicants who are admitted to the Honors College are considered for the Banneker/Key Scholarship.
  • Only U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents can qualify for the university’s merit scholarships.
  • In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the selection committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders, who as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.

How to Apply

Students who submit their admission application and all required materials by the November 1 early action deadline are automatically reviewed for merit scholarships. No additional application is necessary.

The selection committee carefully reviews the entire application of each early action deadline applicant, and semifinalists for the scholarship are invited to an interview in late February or early March as part of the final selection process.

Banneker/Key Semifinalists will receive their interview invitation by March 1 and they will be notified of their final scholarship amount by April 1.
