Applications for the University of California Berkeley’s Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme are now being accepted by students from Sub-Saharan Africa who wish to study in the United States. Applications from women, those with disabilities, and displaced or refugee populations are especially encouraged.
A ten-year partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and the Centre for African Studies will support 201 academically gifted master’s degree candidates from Sub-Saharan African nations who are dedicated to bringing about revolutionary change on the continent.
Financial Aids & Benefits
The Mastercard Foundation Scholar Program is a fully-funded program which covers the entire costs associated with earning a master’s degree to include;
- Tuition fees,
- Travel fares,
- Berkeley student fees,
- Visa and SEVIS fees,
- Housing, food, living expenses, and
- Cohort signature programs which will focus on leadership and entrepreneurship.
Qualifications for Eligibility
The following eligibility conditions hold for those applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholar Program at UC Berkeley:
- The applicant must be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country, including Africans who are refugees or displaced within the African continent.
- The applicant has academic talent and must first be admitted to a UC Berkeley master’s degree program to be considered for the Scholarship.
- The applicant must demonstrate leadership potential
- The applicant stands a better chance if he/she comes from a socio-economically disadvantaged background
- The applicant has demonstrated a commitment to give back to your community, country, or continent
- The applicant has expressed the desire and intention to return to your home country after completing your studies
How to Apply
Master’s degree applicants must first apply to an eligible master’s degree program before they can be nominated for the Mastercard Foundations Scholars Program. If a graduate program has multiple admission rounds with staggered deadlines, only those who submit applications in the first round can be considered for the Scholars Program.
